Statement of Purpose

State your reasons for wanting to undertake graduate study in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh.

Submit your statement of purpose electronically, in the additional information section of the online admissions application.

Official Transcripts of all Undergraduate and Graduate Work

Submit transcripts electronically (instructions are included with the online application).

Three Letters of Recommendation

Referees shouldsubmit their recommendations electronically (instructions are included with the online application).

Writing Sample

A sample of your philosophical writing (an essay of about 20 or 25 pages) is required. Papers submitted will not be returned. Your name should be clearly indicated on the first page.

Papers should be submitted electronically.

Application Fee

Seventy-five dollars ($75 U.S.) payment can be made electronically along with the online application, or by mailing a check to the department. Checks should be made payable to the "University of Pittsburgh" and mailed with a copy of the payment voucher from the electronic application.

The University of Pittsburgh waives the application fee for the Gates Millennium Scholars' Program,  McNair Scholars, and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos & Native Americans.   If you are a member of one of these groups, and are completing the online application, choose the payment option to "mail your check." Send a printed copy of your payment voucher to the department with "Gates Millenium Scholars' Program,"  "McNair Scholar," or "Society for Advancement of Chicanos & Native Americans," as applicable, written on the voucher. Do not send a check.

International Applicants should also include the following:

Official TOEFL or IELTS scores
(Non-native English speakers)

Submit these scores to the department.

The required minimum TOEFL score is 90 (with at least a score of 22 in all of the four sections of speaking, listening, reading and writing). The required minimum IELTS score is 7.0 (with at least 6.5 in each of its four sections).
